Unofficial Chiptune compo #2 - NES - Interest check

Another year, another unofficial chiptune compo!

As I've hinted to a few of you, I'd like to do another chiptune compo around March this year, similar to the last compo:

http://forums.sdcompo.com/viewtopic.php?t=573

Rules will be similar to the last. The main difference will be that this one will be NES music only. And samples will be allowed this time! I was so inspired by Gilli's "simple things work" - http://www.gilzad.de/music/unfinished/nt_-_simple_things_work.mp3 that I think it would be neat to see what can be done with this technique.

So... Who's in?

:D

I don't suppose there has been any development on the linux NES-tracker front? I remember dabbling with FamiTracker under wine last time, so that should work anyway.

By the way, your "3 cubed" idea has been shelved for now, then? :)

Not sure about a Linux NES tracker. I plan on using ntrq on my PSP so I can do this during my lunch breaks :)

I'd still like to do 3 cubed... Let's save that for the next compo, sometime later this year... Summer or early fall perhaps?

S3M2NSF compiles in Linux (will link to it later if you're interested) but can't switch duty cycles while a note is playing.

NTRQ runs in any emulator, FCEU works just fine. It's a little dodgy to make the .NSFs from it, though, when I tried to do one for battleofthebits.org it messed up the digital drums... so I just took the drums out.

Sorry, plans for this compo fizzled due to being busy with the anniversary mix! But now that that is over, I'd still like to get this compo going. Perhaps within the next few weeks.

I've also got a long time friend from highschool who has been experimenting with Famitracker lately, so I'm going to try to see if I can convince him to join in the competition too :)

I'll keep you all updated

Would it be okay to remix an existing non-chip song in this compo?
I think it could be interesting to recreate a song with vocals or other significant samples on a Fami.

Only if I'm not the only one finding this interesting I'd want to ask for this option.

It would be interesting. Can we save that for next round? Non-chip remix NES round sounds cool.

I think we should do these unofficial compos more frequently, they don't take much maintenance and they are fun.
