Come on Credible, there's no way you think Progear is easier than Under Defeat! I would say they're about the same difficulty, just different styles

They are two of my favourite shmups though, and I was able to clear both of them in 3 credits, that's with about 10 hours practice each. Only other game I've done that on is Dodonpachi. Working on ESP Ra.de. right now

Also I'm with you, I don't really enjoy Ikaruga. But I've never really been able to get into a treasure game. I don't know what's wrong with me

@Organic - Well it is not necessarily easier, but i enjoy those classic 2D Sidescrolling Shoot'em'ups by far more, than the "modern" 3D games like Under Defeat.
What i especially dislike about Under Defeat is, that the direction you are shooting at, is fixed by holding the fire button (at least afair).
Apart from that, the Power Ups at Progear are far cooler - i love those excessive use of explosions :-)
But Under Defeat still is a cool game - even tough i never finished it without using alot of more Credits than you needed.
Regarding Ikaruga - did you ever see those Championship videos e. g.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToBdzV7w5Pc ?
That's really impressive imho.

Apart from that i love all those SNK Neo Geo Beat'em'up games, like Mark of the Wolves or as mentioned the Shoot'em'ups like Pulsar or Blazar. The Metal Slug Series is great, too.
To play the all on the PSP is really cool.

On the Dreamcast REZ is still my all time favourite - how do you like it?

Yes, SF4 will again change my life.
I still can remember these days, when i played SF2 on my SNES (Super Famicom) - no game ever made me more agressive :-)
M. Bison (or Balrog in the US Version - so to speak the final boss) was always able to annihilate me and he seemed invincible.
I will never forget my first victory on the 8stars Difficulty level.
The later releases (SF2 Turbo, Super SF2,Zero/ Alpha) are easier.
What i have seen so far from SF4 seems to be awesome.

Soul Calibur is cool, too. It will be great to play as Vader and Yoda on 4!

No, "shmup" is the unfortunately retarded sounding portmanteau of "shoot'em" and "up". But it's 2d scrolling shooter games like this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 1471&hl=en (a video I made) and like Ikaruga, which Justin posted a link to a video of

It's been my obsession for about 9 months now :D

BTW Justin, I would argue that Under Defeat has older-school gameplay than ANY of the Cave games, and especially Progear with its hyper complex scoring system. It's just that Under Defeat's graphics are all sweet, but the gameplay is still on the 2d playing field.

I definitely like the sprite-style 2d graphics too though. I recently bought a PS2 so I could play the Cave games which were ported. Really wish I could play new stuff like Muchi Muchi Pork or Ketsui. It's a shame Ketsui wasn't ported. One day eventually in MAME I guess !!!

As for Rez, I've loaded it up a couple of times but never really played it more than 5 minutes. I don't really see what all the hype is about. Looks pretty dull to me

BTW I will add my two cents on fighting games ... I never really got heavily into them. I admit to playing my share of SF2, Mortal Kombat, Killer instinct, when they came out... and then enjoying some of the neo geo fighters, especially KOF series...

I usually load up a fighting game about once a year now though :)

2d platformers however, are my passion. I'm constantly on the lookout for the most brutally difficult jumping puzzles I can possibly find :)

I've loaded those up before but never really gotten into them. But I have been playing a little bit of Mega Turrican on genesis on my PSP lately -- I really like the music in the second area, before the eyeball boss. It's so good, infact that I think I'll do a cover of it sometime because it's dying to get a d&b workout :D

I just watched a street fighter 4 trailer. That's interesting.. it's 3d rendered, but they use shading to make it look cartooney and oldschool.

Oh yes - Turrican.
This is one all time classic for sure.
Programmed by Manfred Trenz, a german programmer and the "never again reached" soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck.
I've got all of Chris Hülsbecks CDs - he is giving a one in a lifetime philharmonic concert here in germany in August.
Does anybody know Apydia, that was released on the Amiga?
Great Shoot'em'up and Hüslbeck soundtrack, too.
I wrote a hand written, 6 sided fan-letter to him years ago - and he actually answered it - that was so cool *wallow in memories*.
Some additional Soundtracks from him, that should be mentioned are Giana Sisters, To be on Top, Z-out, Gem'x, Katakis and RType.

@Io - You should really try and play REZ for more than five minutes :-)
