Microsoft Songsmith

Guys, today keith pointed me to a discussion on the Renoise forums.
And there was this advertising.
<irony>We were so convinced</irony> that we decided to download and test it ourselves. Actually I was going to sleep but then I really wanted to know if one can trick it by singing non-standard progressions.
And yeah. But I did a really mean thing, too. I changed the tonic during the song. I think at some parts SongSmith did really well but mostly it got tricked. And all the tweaking didn't help for its autorecognition. One can still change the chords manually to make them fit lateron.
Here are the links:
Songsmith project file (just in case you downloaded the demo, too)
Rendered MP3
Fitting chords XRNS <- Edit: Err, they were worse than Songsmith. Reworked now :)

edit: Ok, I finally played the chords the way they would fit most in my opinion but soon I got tired of it and really sorry for the weak vocals and lyrics this time.

Best wishes,

gilli

Awesome dude..;. Here's where I cracked some jokes about it earlier today :D (different thread... I never saw the one where you & Keith were talking about it)

http://www.renoise.com/board/index.php? ... t&p=144717

and in fact, I was wondering what would happen when you did exactly what you did.

Yeah, you can't really expect it to follow properly. It probably just thinks you're drifting off key near the end. Very interesting though :D

Also catching your reference in the lyrics on the second or third listen here... "Do you remember when I sang another song".... Nice

P.S.... I couldn't get my 2 month old daughter to stop crying, but I put this song on loop and now she's calmed down... So I guess I'll be listening to it for a while :D

wow...nice progression here. Sounds indeed a bit Queen-like !
This is pretty convincing.

I've seen/used autotune and Melodyne, and wasn't to happy with them, since I missed always those certain amount of naturalness. Also generally I think this auto-stuff is the wrong way. I would generally invest my money bettter in singing or guitar lessons instead of trusting any preprogrammed algorithms doing the job for me.

But if you can't sing exactly (e.g. like me :-D ) or have that perfect take which is a "bit wrong" these tools may be a great help. At least they can show you where you are singing out of tune. Which may help to learn singing (???)

@keith: HAHA...so awesome! Mary..."hold my hand and we fly to the moon. I think, I know what you've done last night." Just awesome. Mary really needs a French House version being ducked by a BD!!

Really I'm wondering if SongSmith is worth being bought because it's so much fun for fooling with it.

@Luftherr: Hiya and thanks a lot for the comments. I was also very unhappy with my vocals on this one. You can really hear how tired I was :)

@io: what, you have a so young baby doughter? Grats! But don't let her hear that strange stuff or she'll be listening to freejazz in her teeny ages and you'll wonder what you might have done wrong in the end ;)
Btw, you got the lyrics right. They're very stupid this time but here they are:

Do you remember when I sang another song?
Now it happened and we didn't wait too long.
Let's be happy, let's be glad, Microsoft has made us mad
Take advantage, it's your time to be prepared.
Now the chords are made for us
All you have to do is trust
Don't you worry they (M$) are smarter anyway.
Just be lucky 'cause you are
from today a superstar
...gosh the last line is so embarrassing, I leave it out :)

I updated my first post with a link to the selfplayed chords now.

Edit: HAHAHA, listening to Mary over and over again. Wonderfull :D

Nice work!

@keith: Oh Mary cracked me up, wop, wop wop, maary! The post production really brought the quality level up.

@gilli: Nice diddy, reminds me of Paul McCartney!

You guys are making me curious to try Songsmith.

thanks for the feedback guys.

i did some further labour on that "mary" tune, btw.
www.keith303.i24.cc/temp/the_klausmith_ ... ght_(final).mp3

www.keith303.i24.cc/temp/the_klausmith_ ... _(4t4_edit).mp3

edit: just noticed this board doesn't like brackets within links too much.. you gotta copy/paste the link then.. sry for that..
i was just curious how the vocal would sound if it wasn't that out-of-tune or was played in a different context (instrumentation / mood), hence the 4t4 edit.

everything done with ableton live btw, so the technoid version appears to be a bit raw and amateurish i guess.

this is really a good one ! Of course we all are pro's here and after listening for a few minutes blood is dropping out of my ear, now ;-) ;-).

No really Keith, it sounds very good for a quick production.
Especially the second drum part (is it a loop?) has a lot of punch.

I like this variant most of all. Did you do any further mastering ?
