On my record player this month

Postby organic io » Thu Jun 19, 2008 4:13 pm

Ayaya! Discovered this last night and I really feel like shouting it to everybody about how good it is!!! Both these songs have been going through my head all day. I'm a huge fan of vocal harmony, that being said... These are some of the finest examples I've heard in recent memory...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5kcOlGtWCY
Apparently the girl on the right wrote the song, her name is Anne Heaton and she has been touring with Jewel, I guess she's sort of getting popular right now, I hope she makes it. I need to try to find more of her stuff

A cover sung by the girl who played ukulele in the 1st video, with somebody else playing guitar. Wowza this is so good. I'm not familar with the original song and I almost don't want to listen to it because I doubt it will live up to this :)

1 question, why do people record this stuff with their crappy webcam microphones? makes me so mad when a song is so good but the recording quality is so bad :(

My GF and I have been listening to a lot of music. She's a wee bit younger than I am but we share almost the same tastes in music, and so we can really mutually love most things. :)

Major plays this past month as per GF's particular listening interest:

_
Erasure's newest CD (2007) Light at the End of the World
oh how we do LOVE our quality synth-pop

_
Cause & Effect's first album (1991) Another Minute
Small Synth bands inspired by Depeche Mode make me feel gooey

_
The last two Morrissey albums: (2004) You Are the Quarry and (2006) Ringleader of the Tormentors
My ideological mentor and crooner from another era

_
U2 (1997) POP
IMO, the best and most unique and (one of the) least critically acclaimed U2 albums. Also the one to feature their best use of technology i.e. synths and electronic beats! (after this album, U2 is dead to me :P)

_
The Cure (1992) Wish
My favorite The Cure album - which is kind of saying a lot for a fan because Robert Smith is a pretty prolific artist

_
Hunz (circa 2000 to present) Many of his mp3s i've collected over the years.
I knew my GF would love Hunz, and now she does. He's my favorite artist to come out of the demoscene. New album out!

I haven't had a whole lot of hotness hit me lately but I did finally start appreciating "The Beekeper" album by Tori Amos a few weeks ago, which came out in 2005 and I didn't really appreciate it or get into it at the time. Love it love it love it now though.

That drove me to listen to her "A piano - the collection", a 5 CD set which has a bunch of remastered stuff and B-sides from all her albums from 1992-2006.

Need to find something fresh soon when I finish that. I'm ready though - SDCompo round 29 voting/listening next week :D

A big thank you to the guys at renoise for mentioning me as an artist to look out for. Thank you. As you may have read I use buzz and renoise to construct all of my noises. In the case of this album I used more like 90% buzz and then 10% renoise but the next one will be 100% renoise due to buzz just being well, crashy :D

Renoise Artist link

Thanks everyone!
..::hunz..

Saw hunz blog about mr_mark_dollin's feature of him as an artist. :D

my reply to hunz:

That's cool man. Most of the people at soundevotion use Renoise. Great sounding tracker! But I love the sound of Buzz too! :) I use Psycle.

Anyway, I know you are pro stuff, but if you ever did want to go over there and make the gang oooh and ahhh, then well, that would be amazing!!

i know. right? wishful thinking. but this is like stalking a famous celebrity to me. haha

Sonicade, I know we talked about Conjure One and Delerium a while back ...

So why the hell haven't I heard of Fauxliage yet!!! I just found out about it tonight. A project of Delerium + Leigh Nash. Which is always a good combination! The album came out in 2007! !!!! How did I miss this! In 2007 I was busy listening to the hell out of Imogen Heap. :)

Anyway I'm really excited to listen to it. :D Will post impressions when I've had a couple of listens

I've had a couple of listens to this now.

Honestly, it's nothing to really get excited about. I like it about as much as Delerium's latest album "Nuages du monde", which is to say - It's OK, but nothing great.

There are a couple of highlights, the track "Magic" really reminds me of their brilliance on the Poem album. And track 9 - "All alone", has some interesting 6/8 rhythm.

But overall, it is just very generic Delerium and unremarkable. I think they are suffering from trying to produce too much stuff all the time, but the quality is lacking. I wish they would just slow down and make another masterpiece like Poem.

Oh well. I'm not going to say it's not likely to happen. But I'm not holding my breath, and I'm definitely looking to other artists to fill the gap that Delerium is now leaving in my music listening. :)
