DAW

Postby Airmann » Mon Feb 16, 2009 6:49 pm

Hello guys,

since we want to work together using vocals and real instruments E-Guitar and so on, I really really vote for the usage of a common DAW.
Why ? Easy - Renoise WAV support probably never will reach those of
a full DAW. It's primarily a sequencer, no recording DAW

So which DAW to choose ?

I vote for REAPER made by the former author of WinAMP -> www.reaper.org.

Why ?

- I was blown away by it's ease of use and features.
- A good workflow and tons of essential free plugins
- Dockable Windows (a bit like in Renoise)
- Very high audio quality
- Very very good pitching algorithms
- E.g. Tuner + Auto pitch correction as plug in included
- Endless routing features (including sidechaining)
- multichannel support (5.1 and so on)
- low latency
- COST ONLY 50$ for non-commercials and small commercials AND EVALUATION IS TOTALLY FREE NO TIME LIMIT (only nag screen)
- RUNS on WINDOWS + MAC OS
- active community + monthly updates

So guys: if you want to get in touch with something cool, then
have a look at Reaper. I think I might sell my Cubase 4 soon.

I'll check it out. Bad thing is that it's only in beta stage on OSX...

I'll comment more when I've finished evaluating ;)

ok this I have overseen. I hope that the Beta will run stable.

Some other good things about Reaper:

- very low CPU consumption: I managed to record with a latency of 2ms and 1ms firewire latency !!! It works without clicking. Couldn't do it in Cubase.

- Supports of course Multicore CPUs

- Programm launches and shuts down in lightspeed. Even faster than Renoise.

- Rendering shall also be very quick

- Has a highend Dithering / Noise Shaping filter for Rendering

Okay, I bought the non commercial license. Not bad for 50 bucks =)

It's quite stable, some minor issues with Audio Units, but nothing
really bad. (hmm, well, zooming in/out causes stuttering on the sound,
something I can live with tho...)

wow that was quick :-) Great to hear that it works - yeah !

I think it's really a good decision. Even if it runs not fully stable now.
Some day it will ! This product is gold - no platin it is :-)

Further good news:
Today I managed to synchronize Reaper and Renoise.
What a time saver !! If I had known about this setup months before
I had done my vocals with this combination. It's so much easier
than pasting the vocals into Renoise. And the final mix for vocals tracks in Renoise is really a P.I.T.A
when not using this setup, since you always have to start from the song start position every time when replaying.

To setup synchronization was really a piece of cake. Thanks to The following Tutorial by Vv:

HINT: It is also possible to do this on MAC OS.

BTW: I'm selling my Cubase Studio 4 at Ebay right at the moment. Ha ha don't need it anymore ! Will buy Reaper for sure !

Further discussions

Postby Airmann » Wed Feb 18, 2009 6:41 pm

I think we should stop discussions here and go to the new forum.

I added a topic about what I want to do in the next days with pauls new vocals !

http://skystation.org/smf/index.php?topic=5.0

Moreover I added a topic about suggestions for effectively working together:

http://skystation.org/smf/index.php?topic=6.msg13#msg13

Finally: will switch on my ICQ again in the next days. Now I'm better and not so ill like in the last days.

Last but not least another COOL THING ABOUT REAPER:
you can use 1..N Reaper Instances on different PC Systems distributed over network. So if you own old Hardware, just use it for better performance - wow !!
